It was a beautiful, beautiful place, far from the lands of the humans. Four beings created another world for themselves and others who would rather go back to the 'old way' of life. They would rather use magick and wits, rather than rely on technology and mechanical machines to do their bidding, like the humans.
These beings dubbed their world the Eleventh Wonderland. It was written that the citizens of the Wonderland would never be hurt. They would be sheltered from the madness of the human world. The four beings each appointed themselves King and Queens of each direction. North, East, South, and West. For over a thousand years, they lived in harmony. The King of Jaderest often held celebrations in his beautiful palace. The Queen of the West would offer annual feasts. Nobody was afraid. Everyone could have their say in everything.
But once upon a time, a long time ago, the Queen of the North decided to do a little research. Everyone in Eleventh Wonderland had magic. Although it varied from healing warts to parting oceans, magic was everywhere. It was the very existence of the Eleventh Wonderland. The magic had been in the human world, too, but the humans were scared of it and refused to use it. The four beings dug up this magic again and used it to create the world.
Using the books in her library [the most extensive library in Eleventh Wonderland] the North Queen learned that there had been a magic before the Eleventh Wonderland Magic. There had been a Deep Magic long before this new world was even created. This Deep Magic was now buried deep in the sea. Each Land had its own sea, and each sea met up in the middle. The water gods, who were known for their mood swings, watched over this Deep Magic.
The King of Jaderest allowed the North Queen to go to the Himei Sea and call up the water gods to ask permission to use the Deep Magic. Nobody really knows what happened that day. The North Queen set out alone, travelling until she came upon the sea. There, the North Queen descended upon the waters. She used her magick to allow herself to stay underwater for one day. Those who lived along the shore told of seeing the North Queen come upon the deep sea caves where the water gods lived. Just as the Queen began to use Chant-Magick to gain entrance, a wall of stone split open and the North Queen was dragged inside.
It was a long time before the North Queen reappeared.
When she did, everyone knew she was different. There was a strange hatred in her eyes that had not been there before. Her love for her citizens had been twisted into a lust for slaughter. She found pleasure in the torture of others.
Upon hearing of this change in their friend, the King and Queens of the other three Lands immediately called a meeting of the Royalty. What happened at that meeting is unknown, but it resulted in the North Queen being cast out of the South, East, and West lands forever.
The North Queen still had the Deep Magick, however. This caused rivalry and suspicion among the Royalty. While they wouldn't admit it, everyone wanted some of the Deep Magick. Soon the Eleventh Wonderland was tipped into turmoil. In the Land of Aravis, new rules were set up. Everyone would be drafted into the Queen's 'army' at a certain age. In the Land of Jaderest, while the King often kept up a cheerful persona, by night he plotted and set up sentries and blocks. The Land of Nithael, one of the bloodiest lands, was anticipating this. While the Queen rarely fought in the war, she often collected the body, and would call up the dead. The Land of Anokii called upon the workings of the human world to fight back.
You are a spy, a traitor, a backstabber, no matter who you are. Your closest family members might turn against you. Your neighbour, who you have known for years, has been executed for being a turncoat. Nobody's who they were, and nobody is friends anymore. The Eleventh Wonderland has only one choice; to shape up and become the peaceful Lands they were once before, or to succumb to the human world and sink into evil.
